George’s Kid
I think baseball misses George Steinbrenner. The temper, the fire. He loved to fire his managers. We all hated the Yankees — those damn Yankees — but you couldn’t look away. George was gonna buy the best team money could buy. Who cares. He hated losing, and his players and managers would hear about it.
Wouldn’t it be fun to seeing Georgie’ taking on today’s big-spending Dodgers? Think George would be playing second fiddle? No shot.
I think about ‘The Boss’ when I hear his son, Hal, going on about the economics of baseball like he owns the Tampa Bay Rays — not the team in pinstripes that raked in more than $700 million in revenue last year. Blah, blah, blah.
Did Hal really say that it would be “ideal” if the Yankees’ payroll dropped from $319 million next year? Ideal? Yankees fans just spit out their coffee.
The Yankees were the same franchise that once treated free agency like a shopping spree — the gold standard of baseball excess. Now the heir to The Boss is talking about expenses, taxes, and “weak correlations” between spending and winning. Really?
The Yankees haven’t hung a banner since 2009, and Hal thinks the solution is belt-tightening? Imagine telling George that the road back to the Canyon of Heroes starts with cutting payroll. You’d need a helmet.
Maybe Hal’s right. Maybe “performance science” and “culture” can replace spending. But somewhere, George is flipping a desk in the big owner’s box in the sky.

Have a great day!
