The Colorado Rockies just wrapped one of the worst seasons in modern baseball history — 119 losses, 43 wins, and 50 games behind the Dodgers. When manager Bud Black was canned after a 7–33 start, interim manager Warren Schaeffer went 36–83 the rest of the way. Not sure you wanna put that one on your résumé.
But this week. Surprise! Warren Schaeffer, you’re the 2026 Rockies manager. Schaeffer has been retained.
Pretty sure Warren was as shocked as the rest of us.
In announcing the move, Paul DePodesta, President of Baseball Operations, said that Schaeffer “understands the culture” of the club. The culture?? Paul, the team just lost 119 games. Maybe that’s exactly what needs changing.
Guessing that starting pitchers will be high on the Rockies shopping list this offseason. The rotation’s 6.65 ERA in ’25 was the worst in more than 100 years. And perhaps grab a slugger or two. The Rockies’ –424 run differential was the ugliest since 1900.
Here’s hoping things turn around for DePodesta, Schaeffer, and those long-suffering Rockies fans.
